An Overlanding Life
The Dragoman brochure that first hooked me on the life of overlanding looks very old-fashioned to my eye now but, of course, 1988 was a long time ago.
At the time, this brochure was my window to a different life, a life of adventure and excitement, and I was entranced.
If you’ve read my memoir, Chasing Lions, you’ll know that, eventually, I became an overland expedition leader – one of the first few women to do this commercially.
The book tells the story of my journey from timid modern languages student and advertising executive to truck-driving, spanner-wielding tour leader in the Middle East and Africa. I was a mouse looking for her inner lion, her roar.
You’ll have to read the story to see the adventures I had and the changes I made to my life, but to set the overland scene, I thought I’d share some pictures of what life on the road was like.

As I write this (February 2022), I am sad to report that, due to the global pandemic, Dragoman has had to temporarily close operations. However, I’m sure they will be back when cross-border travel becomes easier once more.
Until that time, do have a look at their website to find out more about their exciting journeys: Dragoman.com

Thanks to Dragoman for sharing these images with me. They are taken by leaders and passengers over the years.
